Mansplainer

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A man who patronizingly explains something to a woman as though she lacks the knowledge to understand it
  2. Someone, usually male, who condescendingly lectures a woman on a subject she already knows well
  3. A person, typically a man, who talks down to women by explaining things they understand perfectly

Etymology: "Mansplainer" is simply "mansplain" with the agent suffix "-er" added, meaning one who mansplains. The suffix turns a verb into a noun for the person performing the action, as in "teacher" or "singer," so the word follows a very ordinary pattern of English word-formation. The verb it rests on, "mansplain," is the more interesting part of the story, since it is a blend of "man" and "explain." Its formation is a deliberate coinage that describes a man explaining something to a woman in a condescending way, often on the assumption that she knows less than he does. The newer word takes that coinage and gives it a noun form for the person doing the explaining.
