Etymology: Long before letters filled it, the "mail" was a bag. English took the word from Old French "male," meaning a leather pouch or wallet, and the sense of its contents, the letters themselves, came later. The carried thing took its name from the container. "Carrier" comes from Old French "carier," to transport by cart, from Latin "carrus," a wheeled vehicle that was probably borrowed from a Gaulish source. The compound simply joins the two: a person who carries the bag.
