Etymology: "Lovefests" is the plural of "lovefest," a compound of "love" and "-fest." The first part is ordinary English "love," inherited from Old English "lufu." The second part, "-fest," is a suffix borrowed from German "Fest," meaning "festival" or "celebration." English took "Fest" from German and used it as a combining element, so that a "fest" is any gathering devoted to a particular activity or feeling. The German "Fest" traces back much further, through Middle High German "fëst" to Latin "festum," meaning "feast" or "holiday," and through Latin to an older root linked to "fēstus" (festive). English did not borrow "lovefest" from Latin, however. The suffix came into English from German, and the compound was formed on English soil by attaching it to "love."
