Etymology: "Logopedia" combines two Ancient Greek words that once meant something quite different from speech therapy. "Lógos" meant speech, discourse, story, and also reason and calculation, while "paideía" meant the rearing and education of a child. Put together, they point to the broad idea of educating through speech, a sense that has little to do with clinical treatment. The modern meaning came from the same kind of building. Speech therapy was named by combining Greek roots at a time when such terms were coined freely from classical materials, so the word reflects a deliberate modern construction rather than an ancient practice. "Logopedics" is the more common of the two forms, and this term is its synonym, taking the same Greek elements in a slightly different arrangement.
