Etymology: "Logins" is the plural of "login," a noun formed from the phrasal verb "log in," meaning to identify yourself to a computer system before you can use it. The noun is a back-formation of sorts in its own right: the verb came first, with its sense of recording entry into a system, and the noun was derived from it afterwards, so the credentials that let you in are named after the act of logging in. The verb "log in" draws on the older word "log" in the sense of a record or journal, as in a ship's log, where entries were written down. To log in is therefore to be entered in a record. Each time you sign in, you are, in effect, writing your name into the system's book.
