Etymology: The word "loge" carries a surprising link to the humble leaf. Its ancestor in Frankish was "laubijā," meaning "shelter," and it is related to the Old High German "loub," which meant both "leaf" and "foliage" and also "porch" or "gallery." The same Germanic root gave Old English "lēaf," so a theatre box and a leaf share a common ancestor. The idea was of a covered place built of greenery, a leafy bower or arbor where people could sit in shade. From that sense of a sheltered covered walkway, French developed "loge," which came to mean a small enclosed space or cubicle. English borrowed the term from French for the private enclosed seating in theatres and opera houses, where the sense of a walled-off, sheltered space survives in the modern meaning. "Loge" is a doublet of "lobby," "loggia," and "lodge," words that entered English by different routes but all descend from that same Germanic shelter idea.
