Etymology: The Italian city of Livorno has a name that has been worn down over two thousand years, and the English form "Leghorn" is one of its older survivors. The name traces back to the Liburnians, an ancient people who lived along the eastern Adriatic coast, in what is now Croatia. Their name was Latin "Liburnus," and over time it passed into Old Italian as "Legorno," which later softened into the modern "Livorno." English kept the older shape. "Leghorn" and "Livorno" are doublets, two forms of the same word that entered the language by different routes, one through the older Italian and the other through the modern one. The city is the same, but the spellings reflect different stages of Italian's development.
