Etymology: The word is a compound of "lighter" and "man", and the first half is the more interesting one. "Lighter" comes from Middle English "lightere", borrowed through Middle English from Old English "lihtan" (later "lighten"), whose original sense was to make something lighter in weight. The lighter was, in other words, the vessel that relieved a larger ship of part of its cargo, lightening its load so it could get into shallow water or be unloaded at a quay. The "-man" element is the ordinary English word "man", from Old English "mann", a plain word for a person. Joined to "lighter", it named the worker who operated these flat-bottomed craft in the harbour.

Synonyms: barge operator, cargo handler, dock worker
