Etymology: The noun "lever" goes back to Old French "leveor," from "lever" (to raise), ultimately from Latin "levare" (to lift, from "levis," light). The suffix "-age" turned the tool into a noun for the force it delivers. The verb sense, though, took a surprising detour through the Japanese martial art of judo. The idea was that a fighter could use an opponent's own weight, height, and balance against them, turning their momentum into a means of throwing them. That notion of exploiting an existing advantage to multiply your effort carried over into English, where it came to describe using borrowed money to magnify returns, and then, far more broadly, using any resource or advantage to get more out of a situation.
