Etymology: "Leftmost" is a plain English compound: "left" plus the superlative suffix "-most," which marks the extreme end of a range. The suffix has a longer ancestry than the word it attaches to. Its distant forebears include Proto-Indo-European superlative endings, which passed through Proto-Germanic and then Old English as "-mest." That older form was later reshaped in Middle English into "-most," the spelling that survives today. The "-most" ending is what makes the word work. Words like "uppermost," "innermost," and "foremost" follow the same pattern, so "leftmost" joins a long-standing set of English superlatives that name the extreme point in a direction or order. Its meaning is simply the endpoint of a line or group on the left side, with no extra layer of sense beyond that.
