  3. A sovereign state bordered by Syria and Israel, renowned for its ancient cities, vibrant nightlife, and distinctive cuisine

Etymology: The name Lebanon is older than the country by several thousand years. It belongs first to a mountain range, and the Hebrew word "ləḇānôn" that names it is built on a root meaning "white," the same root behind the Hebrew "lāḇān" (white) and the Arabic "laban" (milk). The likely reason is the snow that lies on the range for much of the year, which made the mountains visible from far away and gave them a name based on colour. The country took its name from the mountains, not the other way round. The range runs along the coast of the eastern Mediterranean, and its name passed from the landscape to the territory that lay beneath and around it.
