Etymology: Speech and the tongue were once the same word. Latin "lingua" meant both the muscle in the mouth and the speech it produced. English "language" descends from it through Old French, which had "language," built on a Vulgar Latin form "linguāticum." English also took "langage" from the same source, a doublet of the same word that arrived by a parallel route. Both forms gradually displaced the Old English "ġeþēode" for a people's speech, though "tongue" still survives in that sense. This verb is simply the -ing form of "language," so its meaning rests on the noun's history. The organ that gave the word its first sense is still present in every use of it.
