Definitions

  1. Illuminated or lit up by a bright light source, especially by a lamp; struck or hit forcefully, often repeatedly; applied or fitted with a lamp or lighting device
  2. Made bright or visible by shining a lamp upon it; received a heavy blow or impact; equipped with lamps or lighting fixtures
  3. Provided with illumination from a lamp or similar light; physically beaten or struck; furnished or adorned with light sources such as lamps

Etymology: "Lamped" is the past tense and past participle of "lamp", and the verb has a striking pair of meanings: to light something up, and to hit someone. The lighting sense comes from a Greek word for a torch. In ancient Greek, "lampas" meant a torch, lamp or beacon, and it could even describe a shooting star. It passed into Latin as "lampas" and then into Old French as "lampe", which English borrowed in Middle English as "laumpe" or "lampe". Before that loan arrived, English speakers had their own word, "lēohtfæt", literally "light-vat", and the Greek-derived term gradually displaced it. The English verb sense of striking or beating is much later and is the odd one out. It appears to be a slang development from the noun in the sense of an eye, which is a separate and less certain thread, so the connection should be taken loosely. The lamp-related verb meanings, by contrast, follow naturally from the noun: to furnish a place with lamps, or to provide it with light.
