Etymology: "Kursaals" is the plural of "kursaal", a word borrowed from German, where it combines "Kur", meaning "cure", with "Saal", meaning "hall". The original sense was literal: a hall built at a spa town, where visitors taking the waters or undergoing a cure could gather. Those halls were social centres as much as medical ones, offering music, reading and conversation, and over time the same kind of building came to host gambling and public entertainment. The English term therefore carries a German spa tradition with it. Its meaning shifted from a place for taking the cure to a place for amusement, a change that mirrors the way resort towns turned health visits into leisure pursuits. The plural form simply reflects the usual English treatment of a borrowed noun that is now counted as a common word.
