Etymology: "Kneeboards" is the plural of "kneeboard," a compound of two plain English words: "knee," from Old English "cnēo," and "board," from Old English "bord," meaning a flat piece of timber. The combination describes exactly what it sounds like, a board meant to be carried or ridden on the knees. The more recent sense, a board for water sports, reflects how the object is used rather than how it was first named. Surfers and water-skiers adopted a kneeling stance on a board, and the compound was applied to that equipment as well as to the older padded or rigid supports worn on the knees during work.
