Klyster
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A medical injection of liquid into the rectum, or the syringe used to deliver it
- An old-fashioned enema, or the device used to administer fluid into the bowel
- A rectal syringe or the liquid treatment it delivers, once common in medicine
Etymology: In Greek, "klyzein" meant simply to wash out or rinse, and from it came "klystēr," a device for flushing the bowels. Latin borrowed the term as "clyster," and it reached English through Old French "clistere" in the late Middle Ages. "Clyster" was the standard English spelling for centuries, and the "k" spelling is a less common variant of the same word.
