Kickup

Part of speech: noun, verb

Definitions

  1. The process of elevating an object or increasing something's intensity occurs alongside a sudden disruption caused by a forceful action, often leading to debris being lifted into the air
  2. A rapid raising or disruption of matter or intensity due to a strong force striking or moving an object
  3. The abrupt disturbance or elevation of particles, material, or energy resulting from a powerful push or impact

Etymology: "Kickup" is a deverbal formation: it was derived from the phrasal verb "kick up," so the noun grew out of the verb rather than the other way round. The verb itself is built from "kick," with the particle "up" adding the sense of raising or stirring something into view. Put together, the literal picture is of a foot flinging dust, dirt or debris upward, and that physical image carries straight over into the figurative "sudden stirring up" the noun now names, as when a remark causes a kickup of argument.
