Khema

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. Something that serves as a temporary shelter or dwelling, often used by travelers or during festivals
  2. A structure made from natural materials providing protection from the elements
  3. An enclosure or area designated for specific activities, often associated with communal gatherings or rituals

Etymology: In Sanskrit, "kṣema" meant safety, security, or well-being. Its Pali form, "khema," carried the same sense and was used of a place free from danger. A shelter where a traveller could rest secure follows naturally from that core meaning of protection. The shelter sense is the one the English noun uses. The word's safety-centred meaning explains why a resting place for travellers would bear it.
