Etymology: "Keyboarding" is formed by adding the suffix "-ing" to "keyboard", so its history is essentially the history of its parts. "Key" comes from Old English "cǣġ", and "board" from Old English "bord", a flat piece of timber. Put together, a keyboard was originally a board of keys, the row of levers that a player pressed to sound an organ or a similar instrument, and the word later passed to typewriters and then computers. The suffix does the rest of the work. Adding "-ing" to a noun turns the compound into an activity, so "keyboarding" names the act of working such a board, and in its modern sense the act of typing text electronically. Its plural, "keyboardings", simply counts separate instances of that activity, for example different sessions or kinds of typing work.
