Etymology: Keswick is a town in England's Lake District, and its name records a dairy. The first element comes from Old English "ċȳse", meaning "cheese", and the second from "wīc", meaning "farm" or dairy farm, so the name originally described a place where cheese was made. The "k" sound in the modern spelling, rather than the "ch" you might expect from "cheese", is the result of Old Norse influence on the local speech, which turned the sound from "ch" to "k".
