Etymology: The name "Kerala" reaches English from Malayalam, the language of the state itself, where the word is written കേരളം (kēraḷaṁ). Its deeper origin is unclear, and scholars have offered several explanations. The most widely repeated one splits the name into two Malayalam words: kēraṁ, meaning "coconut tree," and aḷaṁ, meaning "land," giving "land of coconuts." That reading fits the region well, since coconut palms line much of its coast and the idea is now the state's nickname, but the etymology itself remains uncertain. Because the name is borrowed directly from a regional language rather than passed through Sanskrit or Latin, it kept its local form, and English speakers encountered it as a place name rather than as a common word. The spelling in English has stayed close to the Malayalam original, so the coconut connection is easy to see once the parts are known.
