Etymology: The word "keeners" is simply the plural of "keener," and the sense that matters here has a grim origin. The noun comes from "keen," a verb meaning "lament," which in turn was tied to the Irish "caoineadh," the traditional lament sung over the dead. The "keeners" were the mourners who performed these wailing laments at funerals, so the earliest sense was literally a person who grieves aloud. The modern meaning, someone passionately eager or perceptive, grew out of a different "keen." That adjective, meaning sharp or eager, is a separate word, and the two were later reinterpreted as one. The noun "keener" was formed from it by adding "-er," meaning "one who is," so the eager enthusiast came to be named by the same ending once used for the professional mourner.
