Kebob

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  2. a form of preparation involving marinated ingredients cooked over an open flame
  3. a popular food item in various cuisines, often served with sauces or bread

Etymology: The word "kebob" is simply an alternative spelling of "kebab," and its roots run back to Arabic "kabāb," a term for roasted or grilled meat. That Arabic word reached English by a winding route, passing through Hindustani (the shared language of Hindi and Urdu), Punjabi, Persian and Turkish, where the form "kebap" took hold, before English speakers adopted it. The word has a close relative in the Balkans. "Cevapi," the grilled minced-meat sausages of the former Yugoslavia, is a doublet of "kebab," meaning the two words descend from the same source but arrived in European languages by different paths. So the sausage and the skewered meat share a common ancestor in the Arabic term for grilled meat.
