Etymology: In Turkic languages across Central Asia and Eastern Europe, "kazan" means a large metal cooking pot or cauldron. Turkish "kazan" has that meaning, and Azerbaijani "qazan", Kazakh "қазан" and Uzbek "qozon" are cognates, so the same vessel name is shared across the region. English took the noun from Russian "казан" (kazán), which had borrowed it from a Turkic language. The Russian form kept the core sense of a cauldron, and the English noun now applies to a major city, one of the region's main centres of politics, industry and higher education.
