Katsuras

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A type of tree known for its distinctive heart-shaped leaves and aromatic bark that grows primarily in East Asia
  2. A deciduous tree admired for its unique foliage and pleasant scent, often cultivated in gardens and parks
  3. A botanical species appreciated for its attractive leaves and sweet fragrance, commonly found in temperate regions of Asia

Etymology: "Katsuras" is the plural of "katsura," the English name for the Japanese tree Cercidiphyllum japonicum, which is native to Japan and China. The Japanese name is written with the character 桂, which in Chinese usually refers to a different fragrant tree, the sweet osmanthus or cassia, so the name was applied to this tree in Japan rather than carried over from China. The origin of the Japanese word itself is uncertain. The most surprising trait of these trees is their scent, which is strongest in autumn. As the heart-shaped leaves yellow and fall, they release a smell often compared to caramel or cotton candy, produced by compounds that build up as the leaves break down.
