Kashubs
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A Slavic ethnic group living mainly in the Pomerania region of northern Poland, with their own language and traditions
- Members of a West Slavic people native to the Pomeranian region on the Baltic coast of northern Poland
- The people of a Slavic minority in northern Poland, whose historic homeland lies around the Gdańsk area
Etymology: "Kashubs" is the plural of "Kashub," a member of the Kashubian people of northern Poland, whose name in their own language is "Kaszëb" and in Polish "Kaszub." The plural form simply refers to several members of that group, so the word's history is really the history of the people's name, which the English form reproduces from those two source languages.
