Etymology: The puzzle takes its name from an English phrase. Its Japanese name, "kakkuro", was shortened from the English "cross sums", the label for the kind of grid where a number in each block is the total of the digits running across or down it. Japanese puzzle makers and publishers adopted the term and clipped it into the familiar "kakuro", which is how English speakers now know it. "Kakuros" is simply the plural of "kakuro", used when referring to more than one of these puzzles.
