Juul
Part of speech: noun, verb
Definitions
- A brand of electronic cigarette that uses flavored nicotine vapor as an alternative to traditional smoking
- A popular vaping device known for its discreet design and variety of flavored pods for inhalation
- A type of portable vaporizer that allows users to inhale nicotine in a liquid form, often appealing to young adults
Etymology: Within a few years of its 2015 launch, the Juul brand name had become a verb. Its founders, Adam Bowen and James Monsees, developed the device at the company that became Juul Labs, and the sleek, flash-drive-shaped vaporizer quickly took off in the United States. Teenagers and young adults began to "juul," meaning to use one, much as earlier generations said "Hoover" for vacuuming or "Xerox" for photocopying. The verb spread faster than the brand's own marketing. The name itself is a coinage with no older source. The company has said it was chosen to suggest a jewel, a small, polished object, though some commentators have also linked it to the unit "joule." The sources I can confirm don't settle which, so the jewel explanation is the one the company itself gave.
