Etymology: "Juego" is Spanish, and its ancestry is Latin, where "iocus" meant a joke, jest, or playful act. Over time the Latin "iocus" shifted in Spanish, where the sense of "iocus" as a light jest broadened to cover play in general, then to games with rules. The Spanish word lost the "o" sound of its Latin ancestor, a regular development in Spanish, which turned the vowels and consonants into the form we see today. Spanish "juego" also had a notable doublet in English: "joke" and "jest" come from the same Latin root, though they reached English through Old French rather than directly. This means the English word "joke" and the Spanish "juego" are cousins that drifted into very different meanings, one a quip and the other a whole activity with scoring and players.
