Etymology: Joynt is an older spelling of joint, from Old French "joint", the past participle of "joindre", "to join". The French verb descends from Latin "iungere", "to join or yoke", and that same Latin root gave English "yoke", the wooden frame that binds a pair of oxen together. A joint, then, is literally the place where two things have been yoked. The adjective sense, "shared by two or more", grows from the same participle. Something joined is something held in common by the parties joined, which is why a joint account or a joint statement belongs to more than one person.
