Etymology: "Jogged" is the past tense of "jog," a word whose earliest sense was violent rather than leisurely: to shake up and down. That original shaking survives in the idea of jolting something to wake it or shift it, and the running sense came later as a gentle, rhythmic version of the same up-and-down motion. The verb's ancestry is uncertain. One possibility is that it comes from "jag," meaning a sharp projection, through a related verb "jaggen," meaning to pierce, prod, or stir up. The other possibility is that it is an early alteration of the English "shog," meaning to jolt or shake, which traces back to Germanic forms related to an old root for shaking and stirring. Both routes point toward the same physical idea of a sudden, jerky motion.
