Jhelum
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A river located in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent that flows through the Kashmir Valley into the Chenab River
- A significant waterway known for its scenic landscapes and historical significance that runs through both India and Pakistan
- A geographical feature that plays a crucial role in the hydrology and ecology of the Kashmir region, often referenced in cultural and historical contexts
Etymology: Long before English speakers knew the river, it had other names: the Sanskrit "Vitasta" in Kashmiri tradition, and the "Hydaspes" of the Greek writers who recorded Alexander the Great's campaigns in the region. The modern name does not descend from either. It was borrowed from Urdu, where the river is called جِہْلَم, transliterated as "jihlam" and, in an older form, "jhelam." English therefore keeps the Urdu sound and spelling, not a Sanskrit or Greek ancestor. The word names only the river itself, and its form reflects the route by which it reached English.
