Etymology: The programming language and the coffee share a name for a reason that has little to do with either. Java is an island in Indonesia, and its coffee was prized enough in European trade that "java" became a common name for coffee itself. The word reached English through French "java", and in the United States it spread further: coffee drinkers in San Francisco, an early center of the American coffee trade, used the name for any cup of coffee. The programming language took its name from that slang. When it was developed in the 1990s, its creators wanted a short, lively name, and the coffee association gave it an energetic, caffeinated feel. The island's name, however, is older still and has nothing to do with computing.
