Etymology: Most people would never guess that this word started life as a name for coffee. At the end of the nineteenth century, "jamoke" was a blend of "java" and "mocha," two coffee names fused into a single slangy term. The coffee sense was the earlier one, and the insult came later. By the 1920s or 1940s, the word had also come to mean a fool or idiot, which suggests a joke that someone's brains were no more substantial than a cup of coffee. Its origin for this sense is uncertain. One possibility is an Italian-American dialect word, "giamope," meaning idiot, from Neapolitan or Sicilian. The first syllable resembles "jaboney" or "jiboney," and the second resembles "moke," so the word may also have been shaped by these sounds. In the 1960s, the word picked up another slang sense, referring to male genitalia. The coffee origin may also be the source of "cup of joe" and "joe," both slang terms for coffee.
