Etymology: "Jacketless" is about as plain as English compounds get: it is simply "jacket" with the suffix "-less" attached. "Jacket" came into English from Old French "jaquet", a diminutive of "jaque", a short tunic or jerkin, and "-less" is the Old English suffix meaning "without", as in "careless" or "homeless". Put together, the word means lacking a jacket, and it is used literally, for someone wearing only a shirt on a cold evening, or figuratively, for a book without a dust jacket.
