Izzle

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A playful slang suffix that replaces the ending of an ordinary word, as in fo shizzle for for sure, popularized in mid-2000s hip hop culture
  2. A jocular informal ending attached to words by swapping their final sounds, most famously heard in phrases like fo shizzle and drizzle-style slang coinages
  3. Slang added to the end of English words by replacing their final syllable with a nonsense ending, widely associated with the rapper Snoop Dogg

Etymology: Snoop Dogg did not invent this kind of wordplay, but his music made it famous. Slang speakers had long used "-izzle" as a playful ending: "for sho'" (for sure) became "fo' shizzle," and the pattern spread from there. The "shizzle" part is generally thought to be a disguised version of a stronger word, a euphemism that sounds like "shit" without saying it, though the exact origin is uncertain. The technique is a substitution. Speakers keep the start of a word and swap the final syllable for "-izzle," so "my" becomes "my nizzle" and "crazy" becomes "crizzle." It works as a rhyme game and a sign of group identity, which is why it spread through rap and youth slang. Its meaning depends on context. The "-izzle" ending carries no meaning of its own and is used for humour or emphasis.
