Etymology: "Isopolities" is the plural of "isopolity," a term that comes from ancient Greek ἰσοπολιτεία (isopoliteía), built from ἴσος (ísos), meaning "equal" or "same," and πολίτης (polítēs), meaning "citizen." The Greek word itself grew out of ἰσοπολίτης (isopolítēs), a "citizen with equal rights," so the core idea was a status of equal citizenship rather than a place or a government. That idea mattered in practice. Under an isopolity arrangement, two communities that remained separate states could grant each other's citizens the same rights and privileges, so that a person from one town could hold property, trade, or take part in civic life in the other as if they belonged there. The concept was a way of linking independent cities without merging them into one.
