Etymology: "Ironworks" is the plural form of "ironwork," so the word's history is really the history of its base, "ironwork," which appeared in Middle English as "ironwerk" or "irynwerk." That earlier spelling shows the building blocks plainly: "iron," the metal, joined to "work," meaning something made or done. Put together, the original sense was simply objects or fittings made of iron, such as the wrought metal grilles and hinges of a building. The plural came to name the places where that work was carried out. Once a site was devoted to smelting and shaping iron on a large scale, people spoke of the works in the plural, a usage that follows the common English habit of using "works" for a factory or plant (as in "gasworks" or "waterworks"). The compound thus moved from describing a product to describing the establishment that produced it.
