Etymology: The name at the root of this word once meant something like "land of the Aryans." "Iran" descends from the Old Persian "Ariya," meaning "noble," and the Avestan "airyanəm," the name for the homeland of Iranian-speaking peoples. English "Aryan" comes from the same ancient root, which is why the two words look alike. The shared root has no connection to the racist ideologies that later misused "Aryan." The word itself is a plain formation: "Iran," the verb-forming suffix "-ise," and the noun suffix "-ation." It follows the pattern of words like "Americanisation," describing a process in which Iranian practices, language, or values spread into another community. Foreign writers long used "Persia" for the country, and the government's request that "Iran" be used internationally made the country name the natural base for words of this kind.
