Etymology: The "i" comes from Apple's product line, which had already used it for the iMac and iPod. Apple said the letter stood for internet, and also for individual, instruct, inform, inspire, and entertain. The "pad" is the older paper sense, a stack of sheets bound along one edge, like a notepad. The name thus describes a flat, portable surface for writing and reading, the way a paper pad does. The name was not free to use everywhere. A Japanese company, Fujitsu, held the "iPad" trademark in Japan, so Apple had to resolve that claim before selling the device there under the same name.
