Etymology: "Invoken" is an older past participle of "invoke," the form that survives in poetry and archaic phrasing, as in "the spirit has been invoken." It is an inflected form, so its story is really that of the verb. "Invoke" comes from Latin "invocare," meaning "to call upon," formed from "in-" and "vocare," "to call." That Latin "vocare" is built on "vox," "voice," so the verb's root sense is calling out to someone.
