Etymology: Invigilation comes from "invigilare", a Latin verb meaning "to watch over" or "to keep watch," built from "in" and "vigilare" ("to keep awake," from "vigil," "wakeful"). The Latin root also gave English "vigil," a night of watchfulness, and "vigilant." The English word is a back-formation or direct derivation from the verb "invigilate," which is itself borrowed from Latin "invigilatus," the past participle of "invigilare." The verb was used in English in the sense of keeping watch or being attentive, and the sense of supervising candidates during an examination developed later, in the context of university and school examinations in Britain.
