Etymology: "Intergalactically" is simply "intergalactic" with the adverb ending "-ally" attached. "Intergalactic" itself is built from "inter-", meaning "between", and "galactic", from "galaxy," so the whole word describes something happening between galaxies, or across the vast gaps separating them. The adjective "intergalactic" came first, and "-ally" is the ordinary suffix that turns an adjective ending in "-ic" into an adverb describing how or where something happens. Adding it to a form such as "intergalactic" follows the same pattern as "scientifically" or "historically," and it adds no new sense of its own.
