Etymology: The root is the Latin verb "surgere," meaning "to rise up," formed from "sub" (under) and "regere" (to set upright). The same verb gave English "source," the place where water rises from the ground, which entered through French. Few people would guess that a spring and a rebellion share a root. "Insurgent" adds the prefix "in-" to give the sense of rising against authority. "Insurgented" takes that base and adds the "-ed" ending, which usually marks verbs and participles, so it is an uncommon formation. Its meaning of being in armed revolt comes straight from "insurgent," and the form is rarely used.
