- A clipped shorthand term pointing to Indonesia or to things that are Indonesian in character
Etymology: Indonesia itself is a 19th-century coinage. In 1850 the Scottish lawyer James Richardson Logan popularised it in a journal published in Singapore, after the ethnologist George Windsor Earl had proposed "Indunesians" as a name for the islands' peoples. It was built from Greek "Indos" ("India") and "nesos" ("island"), so it means "islands of the Indies." "Indom" is a short, clipped form of that name. It takes the first part, "Ind-", and ends in "-om," a trimmed ending, so it works as shorthand rather than as a word with an older history of its own.
