Incohaerentia

Definitions

  1. A state of being disjointed or lacking logical connection in thought or speech
  2. A quality of expressing ideas in a confused or unclear manner
  3. The condition where communication fails to convey clear meaning due to randomness or disorder

Etymology: Its core is the Latin verb "haerere," meaning "to stick" or "to cling." Add the prefix "co-," meaning "together," and you get "cohaerere," to stick together. From there come the nouns "cohaerentia," a sticking together, and "coherentia," the state of holding together. Put the negating prefix "in-" in front, and the result describes the absence of that bond. English shares this root with "adhere," which also comes from "haerere," and with "cohesion," which comes from the same "cohaerere" family. So a word for disconnection is built from the same stem as the words for sticking and holding.
