Impones
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- Applies or enforces a rule, tax, or duty on someone or something
- Forces or places a burden, obligation, or restriction onto another person or group
- Establishes a requirement or demand that must be followed or accepted
Etymology: "Impones" is the third-person singular present form of "impone," a verb borrowed from Latin "imponere," meaning "to place upon." That Latin verb combines the prefix "im-" ("in" or "on") with "ponere," "to place," so its root sense is physical: setting one thing on top of another. The English sense of imposing a requirement grows out of that image of placing a burden on someone. The same root gives English "impose" and "imposition," which likewise carry the idea of a load laid upon a person.
