Etymology: "Implode" is a back-formation from "implosion," meaning the word was created by stripping the ending off an existing noun and treating the remainder as a verb. "Implosion" is the noun for a violent inward collapse, the mirror image of an explosion, and the verb grew out of it as speakers needed a way to describe the action directly. The "-ing" ending here simply turns the verb into its present participle, which is the form used for ongoing action, as in a building imploding or a plan imploding. Because "implode" came from the noun rather than the other way round, its meaning follows the sense of "implosion": something collapsing inward, usually under pressure from within or without.
