In medicine, the sense of being wedged firmly in place gives the word its most familiar use: a blockage of the bowel, or a tooth or other object pressed so tightly into its surroundings that it cannot move. The physical image of something jammed into a narrow space carries over directly from the Latin verb's sense of pressing against.
