Etymology: "Immersions" is simply the plural of "immersion," so its history is that of the singular noun. "Immersion" was borrowed in late Middle English from Late Latin "immersiō," meaning "dipping," the act of plunging something into a liquid. That root sense still lies behind the word's meaning today. The noun's sense has widened over the centuries. Plunging a body into water remains the literal core, but the word has since come to describe any state of being thoroughly absorbed, whether in a liquid or in an experience such as a language course or an interactive exhibit.
